Accessing Information Anywhere

The role of the public library has changed dramatically in the last generation. Libraries are a community gateway to learning and information in all forms – including online.

Public libraries are cornerstones to e-Vermont projects and the Vermont Department of Libraries works closely with e-Vermont staff. In our program libraries have:

  • Received equipment to improve public access to the Internet
  • Hosted workshops for learning basic digital skills
  • Been a principle partner in developing a statewide effort to promote digital literacy
  • Improved their online resources, which are available 24 hours a day
  • Created mobile computer labs to be available beyond library walls
  • Hosted community Wi-Fi zones
  • Hosted Internet Interns from the Vermont State College system, who are available each week to help patrons with their Internet questions

Librarians participating in e-Vermont have led community efforts that range from bringing Internet access to senior meal sites to coordinating an online farmers’ market. They are representative of the creative work happening in libraries around the state.

Nationally, libraries are at the forefront of creative online work and digital literacy initiatives. Learn more about work beyond Vermont at the American Library Association
